Bollywood’s most famous choreographer Saroj Khan is no longer among us. He died on July 3, 2020, at 1.30 am. She was having trouble breathing for a long time and she was admitted to Guru Nanak Hospital in Bandra since 17 June. Although earlier it was being suspected that she is COVID 19 positive, but later her reports came out negative. Saroj Khan had several other health-related problems including diabetes. Saroj Khan (born Nirmala Nagpal; 22 November 1948 – 3 July 2020) was a leading Indian dance choreographer in the Hindi cinema. She was born in Bombay State (present-day Maharashtra), India. With a career spanning over forty years, she choreographed more than 2000 songs. She died on 3 July 2020 of a sudden cardiac arrest.

FACT#1. Saroj Khan’s real name is Nirmala Nagpal, who made the entire film industry listen to her gestures.

FACT#2. His father’s name is Kishanchand Saddhu Singh and his mother’s name is Noni Saddhu Singh. After the Partition of India-Pakistan, Saroj Khan came to India with her family from Pakistan.

FACT#3. Saroj started her film career as a child artist at just 3 years old. Her first film was ‘Nazrna’ in which she played the role of a girl named Shyama.

FACT#4. Choreographer Saroj took dance training from B Sohanlal. During this time, he and Sohanlal came close to each other. After this, Saroj married 43-year-old Sohanlal. Saroj Khan was just 13 years old at that time. At the time he was already married. At the same time, there was a lot of difference between the ages of both. Saroj Khan once said in an interview while talking about her marriage – ‘I used to study in school those days. Then one day my dance master Sohanlal tied a black thread around his neck and I got married. At the same time, I accepted Islam on my own free will.

FACT#5. Saroj Khan had told in an interview that at the time of marriage she did not know that B. Sohanlal was already married. She came to know about this in the year 1963 when she gave birth to son Raju Khan. At the same time, the second child died after 8 months. Saroj Khan had told that her husband Sohanlal had refused to give her name to her children and that is why the distance came between them. But when Sohanlal had a heart attack after a few years, then Saroj came to him again. After that, she gave birth to daughter Kuku. Saroj reared her children alone.

FACT#6. Saroj Khan has choreographed over 2000 songs.

FACT#7. In the 50s, Saroj started working as a background dancer. He trained with choreographer B. Sohanlal. Saroj joined the film Geeta Mera Naam, released in 1974, as an independent choreographer, though her work was recognized much later. Saroj Khan’s main films are Mr. India, Nagina, Chandni, Tezaab, Thanedar and Beta.

FACT#8. Saroj Khan’s acceptance of Islam was also related to a dream. She used to say that in her dreams, a child used to call her from inside the mosque. In the dream, she used to tell the girl Saroj Khan her mother and called her again and again. Saroj Khan had that dream many times. In such a situation, he had decided to accept Islam.

FACT#9. Saroj Khan also told that he had converted to the “Bada Jama Masjid” in Mumbai. Since then, the whole world came to know him by the name of Saroj Khan.

FACT#10. Saroj became a mother again and this time she had a daughter, but this time Sohanlal left her forever and moved to Chennai (then Madras). Later, Saroj met businessman Sardar Roshan Khan. Roshan was also married and had two children, but she was very fond of Saroj. Roshan Khan married Saroj and also gave her name to her children. In an interview, Saroj had said that she and Roshan’s first wife live like a sister.

FACT#11. Saroj Khan also won the National Award for choreographing dance in many films like the film Jab We Met, Guru, Tamil Movie Shringaram, Lagaan, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas. At one time, she brought her own dance show on TV, in which she used to teach the audience to dance to the songs of films. In Bollywood, he was affectionately called Master Ji. Let us know that Saroj Khan, who was a big part of the film world, took leave from the world on Friday 3 July 2020. His life was lost due to cardiac arrest. She was 71 years old. Saroj was ill for the past few days.

FACT#12. Saroj Khan also worked with Shashi Kapoor as a group dancer. Saroj Khan had said to Shashi Kapoor at the time that ‘there is nothing in my house. The payment will come after Diwali.
