He started as a diamond sorter and started his diamond brokerage firm in Zaveri Bazar, Mumbai, within a few years. Adani’s business quickly diversified due to economic reforms in 1991, and he became a multinational businessman. 1995 proved a massive success for Gautam Adani when his company got the contract to operate the Mundra Port. Gautam Adani continued the diversification of his business, and in 1996 Adani Power Limited came into existence. After 10 years, the company also entered the power generation business.
An extensive frightening anecdote in Adani’s life is related to the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai. On 26 November 2008, he was on his way to dinner at the Taj Hotel in Mumbai when terrorists attacked him. The terrorists killed 160 people, but Adani managed to escape. Adani was having dinner with Dubai Port CEO Mohammad Sharaf at the Weather Craft restaurant that day. Then he saw the terrorists entering the hotel and firing bullets. He was also throwing bombs. He was sitting at a height, so he could see that the terrorists were continuously firing toward the swimming pool and the lift. Within moments the hotel staff helped the guests to go to the basement. He started suffocating in the basement, taking him to the Taj Chamber on one floor.
