Neil Armstrong was an American astronaut and the first person to walk on the Moon. He was born on August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and graduated from Purdue University with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1955. He then joined the U.S. Navy and became a test pilot before being selected as one of the original NASA astronauts in 1962. In 1969, he commanded the Apollo 11 mission, which was the first manned mission to land on the Moon.
